Preparing Children for a Flood Disaster

10/4/2021 (Permalink)

Disasters can be frightening and sometimes traumatic for children, but preparing kids before a flood event can help them better adapt to the situation when they know what to expect.

The best thing you can do as a family is to make a plan if a flood were to occur. While discussing your emergency plan of action, it's essential to establish a family meeting place that's familiar and easy to find in case any individuals were to become separated from the group.

Don't forget to think about your family's specific needs, such as dietary needs, medical needs, including prescriptions and necessary devices. In addition, your family's needs changing over time; do not forget to update your plan regularly.

A bag pack full of activities for your family is the best option being that it's easiest to grab in a hurry. Include items that will help to keep your kids occupied during a weather emergency. A few things to consider adding into your kit are:

  • First aid kit
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for everyone in your family
  • Change of clothes to last 3 days, including sturdy shoes; consider the weather where you live
  • Flashlights with extra batteries
  • Cell phone with charger, extra battery and solar charger
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Local maps
  • Baby supplies
  • Books, games or puzzles
  • A favorite stuffed animal or blanket
